How a Stone Lifting Clamp Works and How to Use It Safely

Stone lifting clamps grip a slab or block through friction and mechanical leverage, so correct setup is essential before any load leaves the ground.

A stone lifting clamp uses a scissor-and-cam action: as the crane, hoist, or chain fall takes up tension, the jaws draw together and the built-in 1/2″ studs seat into the stone. The harder the clamp lifts, the tighter it grips. Because the grip depends on those studs engaging solid material, a pilot hole drilled into the stone at the correct depth is what makes the hold secure rather than relying on surface friction alone.

These clamps are suited to a range of stone-handling and setting tasks, including:

  • Lifting and placing dimensional stone slabs and panels
  • Handling and setting stone or precast curbing
  • Positioning masonry units and cut stone during installation
  • Setting monuments, caps, and copings
  • Moving quarried and fabricated blocks around the shop or job site

Always match the clamp to the weight and edge thickness of the stone, stay within the rated capacity, and never lift over people. Inspect the studs, jaws, and pivot points before each use.

  1. Select the right model
    Choose the 505, 506, or 507 based on the stone’s thickness (max jaw opening) and weight (rated capacity), leaving margin below the listed limit.
  2. Drill the pilot hole
    Drill a pilot hole into the stone so the 1/2″ studs in the base of the opening can seat properly rather than skating on the surface.
  3. Seat the clamp
    Position the clamp over the stone so the studs align with and enter the pilot hole and the jaws sit square on the material.
  4. Take up tension slowly
    Raise the hoist gently to let the cam action close the jaws and drive the studs into the stone before the full weight is applied.
  5. Test the grip before lifting
    Lift the stone only a few inches, confirm the clamp is holding evenly and the studs are engaged, then complete the lift.
